Superpowered

Michael LaVista, founder and CEO of Caxy Interactive, a Chicago-based software development firm had acted as strategic advisor to dozens of CIO, CTOs, and CEOs on the development, evolution, and repair of mission- and business-critical software for the past 20 years. Understanding those roles as well as the problems and challenges they face, his goal was to create a book that would offer relevant insights and solutions to that audience.

Key Challenges & Approach

Developmental Editing

Worked with LaVista to develop and iterate book concept, which centered on in-depth interviews with 19 technology executives across industries. Distilled their advice into seven "superpowers" and developed author essays expounding on those powers. Parsed through over 50 interviews to extract content appropriate to book's controlling idea and structure.

Research

Surfaced and vetted secondary research that would enhance or support the author’s ideas.

Book Project Management

Managed copy editor, art directed book cover and book interior design, engaged expert for assistance with indie publishing tasks, secured permissions, and more. Kept author engaged and on task.

Outcome

“Helena saved my book. When I met her I had an idea about what I was going to write and she had the courage to tell me right away it was a bad idea. She was right. We worked together to help craft a fantastic book, find my voice, and create a better story. It was a wonderful experience and she made me and the book better.”
